Throw pillows are by far my favorite home decor accessory. They’re versatile, relatively inexpensive (if you know where to buy) and can be scaled up or down, depending on your style. Personally, I’m a “the more the merrier” type when it comes to pillows, particularly on beds and couches.

But when I had my first foray into home decorating, I had NO IDEA how to arrange them. After a lot of googling and lots of practice across several rooms, I’ve developed quite the knack for pillow arrangement.

In today’s post, I’ll show you four ways to arrange pillows on a full-sized bed—presenting ideas for everyone from the Minimalist to the Maximalist. And, you can shop some of the pillows in these pictures at the end of this post. 🙂

The Minimalist
Three words that come to mind in minimalism are simple, clean and few. You can easily achieve a minimal look without it being uninteresting. Find two PILLOW SHAMS that you love, pair with a solid duvet or comforter and add one textured or patterned pillow for accent. Below are two minimalist options: one with a textured round pillow; the other uses a patterned body pillow in the back, coordinating with the blue on the shams.

The Traditionalist
Traditional typically isn’t in my vocabulary, but if you’re feeling a little timid, this is a no-fail way to go. Stack two shams in front of your sleeping pillows and accent with a coordinating square pillow in the middle.

The Modernist
If you’re looking for a more modern look, you can achieve this in a couple of ways. First, a slight tweak to your anchoring pillows will do the trick. Place your sleeping pillows flat on the bed, and stack your shams on top. Accent these with two pillows of your choosing (preferably in different sizes) to complete the look. If the stacked pillows isn’t quite doing it for you, you can still use two pillows of differing shapes in front of the more traditional, front-facing arrangement for your anchor pillows.

The Maximalist
THIS is my style. Give me ALL the pillows, in various shapes, sizes and patterns. Bring order to chaos by using same-sized pillows in each row until you get to the front. Then all bets are off. For mixing patterns, be sure to use small and large ones for balance–not all small or all large.

One of my favorite places to shop for pillows is Society6 – they have thousands of designs, good quality and great prices (especially when there’s a sale going on). Check out my collection of throw pillowsrectangular pillows and pillow shams.
